“What are you going to do, Cleric? SMITE ME?” -Sir Maximus, Former Knight of Sangovania
When I make a new character, I often pick class first and build all of their personality and backstory traits around their abilities. It helps me focus my ideas.
Lately, I have been trying things the other way around. One thing I’ve come to realize is that the 5e subclass system has really increased the potential of some classes. In the past, if you wanted to be a lower level rugged survivalist, you would mostly default to ranger. With subclasses, you can easily fit that flavor with ancient paladins, scout rogues, nature clerics, etc. The list really does go on and on!
What is your preferred method for character creation? Do you normally play different incarnations of the same character type? Do you roll their stats before picking their race and class? Do you roll at all?
